Business Insider UK – 9 hours ago UK government has today launched a new digital counter-cyber crime unit which will tackle the proliferation of fake news and other “malicious” content.
The Home Office announced the creation of a new unit in partnership with technology company Digby.
The unit will be created in response to the increasing use of social media and “malignant content” to spread misinformation and spread “malefactors and malicious actors” across the internet, according to a Home Office spokesperson.
The new unit will bring together specialist teams with expertise in counter-malicious and cyber crime, the spokesperson said.
In response to this growing threat, the government has made funding available to support the development of an existing counter-extremism and cybercrime unit.
The government will be funding £20 million for the project over four years.
The project will be managed by the Counter-extrems and Cybercrime Directorate, an independent agency that was established by the Government in 2015 to support counter-terrorist activities and counter-virus efforts.
The agency is expected to work with businesses, public authorities, police and other government agencies to identify and mitigate threats to public safety and national security.
The department has previously announced plans to fund a separate unit that would target “extremist content”.
