In December, Britain’s government announced a major new strategy to tackle depression.
The scheme called ‘dementia tourism’, aimed at boosting the number of people visiting hospital for mental health treatment, will provide $10m over five years.
It will be funded by a fund of up to $10bn that will be drawn from the UK’s sovereign wealth fund, the Royal Fund of England and Wales.
In the meantime, Britain is on track to lose one in three of its population over the next 10 years, according to the National Institute of Health.
The government is planning to double the amount of mental health care it delivers to its population, which currently stands at just over 50,000 people.
But it will take a decade or more to turn the tide.
This year’s figures are based on NHS figures, but there is also a large body of research suggesting the number is much higher.
“The picture of mental illness is getting worse, not better,” says Professor Sarah Jones from the University of Cambridge.
“I think it’s quite clear that the government’s plans will not solve the problem of depression.
The new strategy is designed to help people who are feeling depressed to seek help, but it doesn’t really change the fact that we are not getting much help for people who have been living in a very dark place.
There are several ways that the UK is failing to treat people with mental health problems, says Professor Jones.
One is the way it treats people who come to the hospital as a result of a criminal conviction.
That’s not working, says Dr James Clark from University College London, and people with such convictions have to go on waiting lists for services that are not covered by the NHS.
Secondly, there is the idea that people who commit suicide are treated differently from people who do not.
Thirdly, there’s the way that we treat people who get treatment for depression and bipolar disorder.
The NHS has to take care of people with depression, but they have to wait until they are able to receive treatment from the mental health service.
We need to make sure people get the support they need and that the NHS and the wider community are doing everything they can to help. “
We need to get this problem under control.
We need to make sure people get the support they need and that the NHS and the wider community are doing everything they can to help.
But what’s also important is that we also make sure we are supporting people who really need help and getting the help they need.”
