Anonymous called out media outlets for their alleged blacklisting of the digital activist group.
On Wednesday, the online community Anonymous released a document outlining a list of media outlets that it believes are part of a blacklist.
The list includes The Associated Press, CNN, BBC, BBC World Service, ABC, CBS, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, Time Magazine, USA Today, Newsweek, Business Insider, Forbes, Time, Reuters, CNN International, Reuters World Service and NBC News.
Anonymous claimed that “The Intercept” and “ProPublica” were among the outlets targeted.
The Anonymous document, titled “The List of Journalists, Media Executives, and Others Who Are Being Targeted by the Blacklist,” said that the group also called out news outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and The Associated News Agency.
“They are not a media outlet and they are not in a position to report on the news that the American people need to know,” the document said.
“We will continue to fight for a free press and the right of every citizen to publish,” Anonymous said in a statement.
“We will expose them as liars, fascists and fascists and call them out for their blatant censorship.”
The group also said that it would launch a “surge” of its own targeting of other media outlets, including CNN and MSNBC.
“These outlets are doing their best to silence the voice of truth,” Anonymous wrote.
“It is up to us to bring them down.
The media, the tech companies, and the big corporations will pay a price for this, but we will not be deterred.
We will not let them continue to abuse their power.”
The document also said the media organizations were not exempt from the blacklist, but were “protected by the shield of anonymity,” a term that covers individuals, groups and organizations who have chosen not to be identified by name in order to protect their identities.
“The shield of confidentiality protects media organisations and individuals from criminal prosecution, slander, libel, cyber harassment, and other illegal actions that would otherwise be perpetrated on their identities,” Anonymous added.
The blacklist includes names such as CNN executive editor Jeff Zucker, CNN legal editor Michael S. Schmidt, CNN’s chief legal and policy adviser, Matt Zapotosky, CNN Chief Executive Jeff Zucker and former White House ethics lawyer Lisa Monaco.
The White House declined to comment to CBC News on Wednesday.
“It’s not a news outlet, it’s not an investigative news organisation,” White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters on Air Force One.
“And it’s an organization that has been very critical of Donald Trump and his administration.
So it’s a very different environment that I think most people who work in the news business and those who are interested in that news business, would not want to be in.”CBC News asked White House Press Secretary Jay Carney whether the Trump administration has used a blacklist to silence critics.
Carney replied: “I can’t speak to that.
I don’t know that.
That’s not my place to speak to the extent that we’re not commenting on it.”
